Prop shaft drives are the traditional workhorse of offshore cruising boats: a shaft running at a shallow angle from an inboard engine, out through a stern gland (or dripless seal), to an externally mounted propeller. Their great strength is mechanical simplicity — there are fewer specialised parts, and shafts, cutless bearings, and stuffing boxes can be serviced or improvised almost anywhere in the world, which matters enormously when you’re cruising in remote regions far from a main dealer. Shaft drives are also inherently tougher underwater, with no fragile drive-leg housing exposed to impact.
The compromises are efficiency and space: the shallower shaft angle and external strut create more drag than a sail drive, and the shaft tunnel running through the hull eats into what would otherwise be usable interior volume.
For long-distance cruisers who prioritise simplicity, global serviceability, and robustness in remote anchorages, shaft drives often win out.
